Safeguarding Your Service

What safeguards have been built in to the new system to protect customers? Electric suppliers must have written, verbal or electronic authorization from the customer before switching service from another supplier. Marketing materials from suppliers must disclose accurate prices, as well as terms and conditions of the products and services offered. Suppliers must be certified by the State Corporation Commission (SCC). They must also meet additional NOVEC criteria before being approved to opperate in its service area. A list of certified service suppliers (CSPs) will be available from NOVEC and the SCC. If a supplier fails to provide contracted service, the customer can file a complaint with the SCC. The SCC does not have jurisdiction over contractual matters, but should be informed if a supplier is not living up to the contract. The customer would need to contact the Attorney General's Consumer Affairs office if the supplier is not delivering the contracted services.

Customer Rights

The law prohibits switching customers without written, verbal or electronic authorization. Before or concurrent with beginning to provide service, a supplier must provide a statement detailing charges, length of contract, and a process for notification regarding changes in terms of service. Customers will continue to receive their billing and usage data from NOVEC.
